It is pretty damn easy to totally overdo blusher, but this is a scenario demanding the ‘less is more’ approach. Blusher should be enhancing your natural cheekbones, not drawing attention away from your eyes because you have two Barbie pink streaks across your face. Only Amazon tribes can pull off this look, so don’t even try it.
First step is to find a shade that suits you. Generally, baby pinks and peaches are suitable for fairer skin, whilst brown tones and bronzers work with darker skin. I say generally because a girl with dark skin can look fabulous with a light dusting of pink blusher. It is mainly about what you feel comfortable wearing.
Second step, get the right tools. You’ll need a large round soft blusher brush; I prefer ones that are not real animal hair only because I’m one of those crazy animal lovers who think anything ‘made from animals’ is completely immoral. Plus, synthetic blush brushes are often much softer and more durable. You can purchase an individual brush or brush set at any cosmetic counter in department stores, or for cheaper versions, in Superdrug and Boots.
If you’re looking for a new blusher, I happen to have a few favourites that I will happily recommend! Benefit cosmetics are renowned for their blusher range, and I think every sassy girl will know about Dandelion. Oh, the purest of pinkness! This is the blusher I’d use on fair skin with light eyes, as it adds full on freshness to the complexion. Likewise is its peachy sister product
Finally, time to apply. Two options here girls, either smile or pout your lips, I prefer a good pout as you can really see where the natural line of your cheekbone is. Lightly load the brush, and start from the apples of your cheeks, sweeping up towards your temples following the curvature of your cheek. Keep it ‘natural’ looking please! For some added lift and shine, dab some liquid highlighter around your eye socket/high cheekbone area and gently rub in - Benefit’s Highbeam and Moonbeam are fantastic products designed just for this purpose. It totally works for giving the appearance of higher tighter cheekbones, especially in photographs, which are an essential aspect of Facebook and thus highly important, as you all very well know.
Finished? Good. Now you look fabulous, all that is left is to blag our way into A-list celebrity bashes…I’m working on this one!
