The Scarlet Woman

No, I am not confessing to some adulterous act, and no, I am not currently sowing a red “A” onto my coat to emulate the iconic novel. My personal scarlet tale starts off with a lick of polish…nail polish, to be exact. I was heading out for a night to London’s amazing club Maya, when to my absolute horror realised my nails were looking chipped and nasty. To amend the mess, I purchased a cheap and very cheerful pillar box red nail polish which, unknown to me at the time, was a fatally attractive move. It was, quite literally, love at first sight, and now my obsession with all things rouge has spiralled out of control.

Every item I pick up to add to my wardrobe is a shade of red. This is a complete subconscious action, and I only ‘fessed up to this red affair after my cousin pointed out to me that I’m on ruby overload whilst shopping in Norwich city centre. I was like a magpie with shiny objects, but much more vocal and more annoying to other shoppers in my vicinity. Apologies, fellow shoppers, but a bargain is worth shouting about. Funny enough, before my addiction started, I had always felt that red rules the wearer rather than the other way round. The colour alone oozes confidence and without the exact personality attribute to go with it, it can turn into a fashion disaster. You have to revel in the red. To know you can command the room’s attention, and act like you totally deserve it all. I have mastered such an attitude, having already had a stupidly big ego anyway.

What I love most is this colour can add a mild hint of sexual promiscuity to any outfit. Team a classic cleavage covering black dress with red nails, red heels and a small red clutch and you instantly transform from borderline frumpy to fabulous. Or, installing all my faith in the effect block red can have, I wear a plain ruby dress with simple hair, small accessories and let the dress make all the moves. If you’re a sceptic, humour me and try out red nails for a week. It is Comic Relief this Friday 13th March, so you have absolutely no excuses not to try red! You’ll soon learn to love the colour of love, and will smile in agreement of my current obsession.
